... shows that it is not likely that the biologically observed connectivity pattern between orientation selective cells can be derived by evaluating statistical properties of natural images alone (compare figure 3 and 6).
It is however possible to derive it by using transient responses.
If you have problems to see the difference between fig. 3 and 4 compare the synaptic extention fields at the 3 position from the left and the 3 position from the top.
In figure 3 everything is all right were as in figure 4 the strong background diagonal corrupts the formation of a proper extention field.
